Walter J. Smith, Jr., age 79 of Luzerne, Michigan, passed away at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

Walter was born in Port Huron, Michigan on November 5, 1938 to Walter J. and Gretel E. (Achterburg) Smith, Sr. He served his country in both the US Army and US Navy. He worked as a Lab Technician in a Paper Mill prior to his retirement. Walter was an active member of The American Legion Post 62 in Luzerne, Michigan. He served there as Sargent of Arms. Walt was known for telling stories, his witty sense of humor, and his welcoming personality. He enjoyed hunting and looked forward to deer season every year. He also loved to camp and be in the great outdoors. He also was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved to ride with his friends and family.

Walter is survived by his children: Dana Christopher Smith, Steven Andrew Smith, Eric Smith, Kim Smith Mitchell, Channon Lynn McFarlane, Alicia Keith Allen, Kenneth Maxwell Bouverette, and Charlie Ann Bouverette. Walt also leaves behind his brother Dennis Reed Smith, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents: Walter Joseph Smith, Sr. and Gretel E. Smith; his brother William Russel Smith, and his son Bucky Joseph Bouverette.

Visitation on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 5 – 9 PM at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI, and also on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 10 AM until the time of Funeral Services at 11 AM with Chaplain Rick Landry of the Luzerne American Legion Post officiating. Military honors will be offered. Interment will follow at Luzerne Cemetery, Luzerne, Michigan.
