Vera May Shea, 89, of Mio passed away Sept. 27, 2014, at her home.
Vera was born in Fairview on May 30, 1925, to the late Lizzie (Reber) and Fred Kauffman. Vera married Thomas A. Shea and resided in Mio. She worked at Essex Wire in Atlanta for 16 years. Then returning to school, she earned her GED and later her CNA degree. As a CENA, she was employed at AuSable Valley Nursing Home and retired after 10 years. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mio and was devoted to her faith. She was a loving mother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed the outdoors and the small joys of life.
Vera is survived by sister, Adaline Peachey of White Pigeon; brother, Charles (Peggy) Kauffman of Dayton, Ohio; her five children, Carol (Jerry) O’Connor of Ferndale, Theresa (Les) Birk of Grayling, Ruby Renaye Shea of Mio, Thomas (Laurie) Shea of Mio, and Robin (Gary) Richards of Mio. She is survived by 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Shea; her parents, Lizzie and Fred Kauffman; her siblings, Walter (Leola) Kauffman, Donald (Phoebe) Kauffman, Mary Melvina (Fred) Roe, Eleanor (Rueben) Handrich, and Ruby (Ivan) Gongwer.
In Accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mio, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, with Reverend Santiago Hoyumpa officiating.
Interment of ashes to follow at Mentor Township Cemetery, Mio.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Woods Shrine.
