Tyler David Johnson

February 7, 2005 — May 24, 2025

Tyler David Johnson, 20, of Oscoda, Michigan, passed into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 24, 2025, at his home in the presence of his family.  Born on February 7, 2005, in The Woodlands, Texas, Tyler was a free-spirited old soul who brought joy, smiles, and much laughter to his family and friends from his early childhood.
Tyler played baseball and basketball as a preteen and was active in his church and AWANA club.  He was unique in his choice of hobbies and collections, and in his style, often wearing fedoras or golf caps.  He loved playing games and building Lego cars; collecting playing cards, fidget toys, and nutcrackers; and watching classic TV shows.  He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing and hunting.  He worked at a shaved ice stand for one summer as a young teenager.  He did well in his homeschool studies, continuing them until he was no longer physically able to do so.  Around the age of ten, Tyler discovered the yo-yo, a classic toy.  It didn’t take long for this hobby to become a passion.  He began developing his skills with the yo-yo, collecting a variety of them, and showcasing his talent by teaching his skill to whoever wanted to learn.  A highlight of his life was attending the World Yo-Yo Contest in 2019 with the Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter.
His family moved to northern Michigan in 2020, and Tyler continued developing his yo-yo skills despite increasing physical difficulties.  In 2024, Tyler returned to the World Yo-Yo Contest in Cleveland, Ohio, this time competing with a friend and taking 2nd place in their division.
Tyler is survived by his parents, Matthew and Angela Johnson; his younger sister, Bethany Johnson; his oldest sister, Kiersten (Luke) Luttrull of Wisconsin; his older brother, Joseph (Naomi) Johnson of Texas and his nephew, Keane, and niece, Collins; his grandparents, David and Fredonna Johnson of Michigan, and Sherry Blesch of Georgia; as well as extended family and friends who loved him dearly.  He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Blesch of Georgia.
Though he spent almost half his life dealing with the effects of a life-altering brain tumor diagnosis, Tyler rarely, if ever, complained about his circumstances.  At every opportunity, as long as he could, Ty pointed others to Jesus.  His life was well-lived and he leaves his family with many wonderful memories.
A celebration of Tyler’s life will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 11:00 AM at Mio Baptist Church, Mio, Michigan.  The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 AM.
