Steven Paul Schumann, age 79, of Luzerne, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on April 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 24, 1946, in Alma, Michigan, to Arthur and Lucille (Wesley) Schumann. He graduated from Rose City High School and shortly, thereafter, enlisted in the military. A proud Marine Corps veteran, Steven served his country in Vietnam during the perilous years of 1966-1968. Following his military service, he became a dedicated journeyman, union ironworker, a profession he held with great pride. One of his most significant professional achievements was working on the iconic Mackinac Bridge, a testament to his unwavering skill and dedication.
Steve’s life was enriched by the love and companionship of his wife, Dianna (Parshall) Schumann to whom he shared over 50 years with. Together they raised a family that included his children, Kayla (Dan O’Brien) of Dubois, Wyoming and Cole (life partner, Laura Gorski) of Grand Haven, Michigan. He loved his daughter and son deeply and was incredibly proud of his granddaughters, Piper Schumann and Charlee O’Brien. Steve was known as a caring, curious and intellectual soul and will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
An outdoorsman at heart, Steve had a deep appreciation of nature and found joy in paddling his canoe on serene waters, especially the AuSable River, hunting for mushrooms in the woods, and was an enthusiastic hunter, camper and fisherman, spending many hours on the Houghton Creek in Rose City. He often shared these experiences with family and friends. In retirement, Steve and Dianna, shared a passion for traveling across the country creating cherished memories together, including two trips to Alaska, multiple trips to Canada and summer vacations on Bois Blanc Island. Steve, also, had a love for music and it was evident in his guitar playing, which brought comfort and enjoyment to himself and those around him.
Steve is survived by three siblings, his sister, Linda Zimmer, L’Anse, Michigan, brother, Larry (Maurene) Schumann, White Lake, Michigan and brother, Robert (Ann) Schumann, Monument, Colorado, along with his Aunt Virginia Schumann, extended family, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and long-time, dear friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, beloved grandparents, Burgess and Christene Potter, and brother-in-law, Leroy Zimmer.
Per his wishes, following cremation, a memorial service to celebrate Steven’s life will be held at a later date.
