Richard Joseph Sieland, age 78, of Fairview, MI passed away at his home on July 29, 2021.
Richard Joseph Sieland was born on August 7, 1942. He grew up in the area of Caro, Cass City and Gagetown until relocating to the Oscoda County area of Mio. His father was Carl H. Sieland and mother, Myrtle Rocheleau. The Sieland family operated the Log Cabin Bar in Mio in the late 1950s to 1971. Richard grew up with many local residents with stories of the area as well as enlisted to fight for our country.
Richard served in the 9th Cavalry of the United States Army in Vietnam. Following his return from service He was an independent contractor for masonry and carpentry work. He built several homes, garages and fireplaces in the area.
He married Barbara Catherine Maxson of Bay City Michigan in 1968 and resided on Wildwood Trail until relocating to Rogers Road in Fairview in 1977. He was a teacher at Mio AuSable Schools from 1976-1987.
He loved all aspects of the outdoors as an avid hunter and fishermen. He enjoyed horses, team roping for the Michigan Team Ropers Association and rode the trails of Oscoda County with his friends and neighbors. He was a creative artisan in wood and leather. He loved to work in his garage making hand tools and custom knives.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara C. Sieland, one brother Charles G. Sieland of Farwell and a sister, Joan F. Swartzendruber of Bay City.
He is survived by one sister, Margaret Langlois of Caro, Michigan; Three Children: Richelle J. Sieland of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jaye P. (sp. Jamie) L. Sieland of Olathe, Kansas, Ceslaee J. Kuffel of Mio, Michigan.
Two Nieces: Susan Langlois and Jane (sp. David) Cox of Detroit; Two Nephews: Chip (sp. Deb) Sieland of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Chad Sieland of McBain. Five grandchildren: Lauren B. Kuffel, Lewis R. Kuffel of Mio; Ryder J. Sieland, Isaac J. Sieland and Avery Sieland of Olathe, Kansas.
Friends and family may call on visitation at Lashley Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. on August 7th, 2021.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday morning, August 9th at 10 am St. Mary’s Church in Mio, MI with military honors following the mass by Luzerne American Legion Post 162 with member from Mio American Legion 348 and V.F.W. Post 4126. Memorials may be made to The Oscoda County Veterans Affairs, 191 S. Mt. Tom Rd., Mio, MI 48647.
