In Loving Memory of Richard (Rick) Shwary
1943 – 2026

Richard "Rick" Shwary, age 83, of Curran, Michigan, passed away on February 19, 2026. Rick was a man of immense resilience whose life served as a testament to the power of a positive will.

Born in Montreal, Canada, on December 8, 1943, Rick was the beloved adopted son of the late Julia Shwary. In 1975, he survived a workplace accident that left him a paraplegic. While this changed how he moved through the world, it never slowed him down. He spent the next five decades overcoming every obstacle with grit, remaining active and avid hunter and fisherman who was most at home in nature.

Rick’s love for the water began in Fair Haven, where he lived on the water with his first wife, Barbara. Together, they shared a lovely marriage, and it was Barbara’s strength and devotion that helped him navigate the difficult years following his accident as they raised their family. After their time together was tragically cut short by Barbara’s passing, Rick remained strong for his children.

In time, Rick moved on to marry Connie, and together they enjoyed a vibrant life in Northern Michigan. He found a true place of peace at his home in Curran, where he continued his love of fishing and hunting, cherished the lake, and embraced the peacefulness of the water. He was a man who appreciated the simple, profound joys of life: a good conversation, the right piece of music, and the beauty of the outdoors. To his family, Rick was a legendary cook, famous for making the absolute best fried fish—a tradition that became a cornerstone of their time together.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Connie Shwary. Rick and Connie were best friends who shared a life rooted in love, support, and mutual care for one another.

He leaves behind a legacy through his children: Julie (Mario) Simonte, John (Kharissa) Shwary, David (Cheyennea) Shwary, and Jason Shwary; and his stepdaughter, Tammy (Alicia) Elswick. Rick’s joy further multiplied through his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Shwary; his first wife, Barbara Shwary; and his son, Ritchie Shwary.
