Richard Allen Duso

May 9, 1937 — August 23, 2022

Richard A. Duso, age 85, formerly of Essexville, passed away peacefully at his home in Mio on August 23, 2022 with family at his side.  Richard was born on May 9, 1937 to the late Archie and Agnes (Stock) Duso.  As a young man, he learned to hunt and trap with a neighbor he would later refer to as Uncle Art and Aunt Marie Warner who were significant influences on him for his entire life.  Richard married JoAnne Hebert in 1957 and built a family while holding several jobs including working as a police officer for the City of Essexville.  In 1966, he transitioned to working in security for General Motors eventually becoming a Safety Department Supervisor.  During his time in Essexville, Richard was an avid supporter of his children’s many activities, a patron of the arts, a political activist, and a generous and charitable contributor to the community.  He received an award from the city recognizing his 26 years as a volunteer fireman.  After the death of his wife and retirement from General Motors, Richard relocated to a home on the AuSable River in Mio where he enjoyed various construction jobs and working with the Amish community.  He developed a very special relationship with the Byler family, who treated him as a part of their own family.  He also found love again in his long term partner of many years, Marie Clapp.  Richard and Marie were awarded Volunteer of the Year for their devoted work with Hospice.  Richard loved the outdoors and gathering with friends and family.  He seemed to know everyone and was well liked by all who knew him.

Left to carry on Richard’s legacy is his most beloved Marie Clapp; five children, Dan (Teri) Duso, David (Penny) Duso, Dee (Herb) Aikens, Dinah (Gene) Bartley, Darren (Carrie) Duso; six grandchildren, Kelle (Mark) Noxon, Daley Duso, Kate (Paul) Mannion, Derek (Cherry-Mae) Duso, Isaac Duso, Aerin Duso; five great-grandchildren, Alex McMann, Madeline McMann, Dorry Malone, Evelyn Shirk, McKinley Mannion.  According to Richard’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private memorial will occur at a later date.
