Raymond Floyd Yoder, age 74, of Fairview, Michigan went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 21 following unexpected complications with his heart valve, while at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan. He was born on November 5, 1942, in Luzerne, Michigan, the second of four sons born to Elwood and Elizabeth (Weaver) Yoder. Ray grew up in Fairview, Michigan and attended Fairview Schools, graduating in 1961. After high school, he worked on the family dairy farm and served two years in Voluntary Service as an orderly at a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Ray married his lovely wife, Marjorie Roth, in Fairview, Michigan on September 27, 1969. Together, they worked on the family dairy farm and raised three wonderful children: Ferlin Scott, Marty Ray & Mindi Sue. Ray and Marjorie were active members of Fairview Mennonite Church for many years and are currently members of New Hope Assembly of God.
In 1997, Ray and Marjorie traveled to Big Lake, Alaska where they helped build houses with Mennonite Disaster Service. It was there that Ray fell in love with the beauty of Alaska. After retiring from farming, Ray worked one year in the sporting goods department at Walmart in Gaylord, then five years at the Woodworkers Shoppe in Comins. He and Marjorie returned to his beloved Alaska in 2003 to work at Denali National Park, where Ray drove tour buses and Marjorie did bookkeeping. They would go on to work there for six more summers.
An avid outdoorsman, Ray enjoyed: fishing, hunting, gardening, clearing brush in the woods and spending time up at the family cabin on Kabenung Lake in Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed serving the community by volunteering as a mediator for the court system. He had a deep love for the Lord and was very active in church, serving on various church boards, leading Bible studies, and teaching Sunday School.
In their later years, Ray and Marjorie made several trips to Alaska and Indiana to visit their four beloved grandchildren: Parker, Marin, Trevor & Allie. In recent years, they enjoyed spending winter months with friends and family at Sunnybreeze Christian Community in Arcadia, Florida.
Surviving are: a loving wife, Marjorie (Roth) of Fairview, MI, brother Ken (Rachel)Yoder of Mountain Lake, MN, sister in law Tina (Lloyd)Yoder of Midland, MI, son Ferlin Yoder of Lupton, MI, son Marty (Haley)Yoder of Middlebury, IN, daughter Mindi (Jon) Sinclair of Anchorage, AK, and four grandchildren: Parker Yoder, Marin Yoder, Trevor Sinclair & Allie Sinclair. He was preceded in death by: his parents Elwood & Elizabeth Yoder, an infant brother Larry, brother Lloyd (Tina) Yoder, & niece Suzanne Yoder. Ray will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother & friend.
The viewing will be held on Thursday, August 24, from 4-8 p.m. at Lashley Funeral Home, in Mio, MI. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Fairview Mennonite Church in Fairview, MI.
