Mr. Purl Kenneth Lashbrook, age 87, of Rose City, formerly of Mio, passed away, Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 at Bortz Health Care of Rose City.
Visitation at The Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI from 2:00 PM until the time of Funeral Services at 3:00 PM on Friday, August 21st, with members of the Luzerne American Legion Post # 162 officiating.
Interment and Military Honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery Holly, Michigan on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 12:30 PM.
Purl was born March 26, 1922, in Sandusky, Sanilac Co., Michigan., the son of August Leroy ""Gus"" Lashbrook and Mabel Mae Smith Lashbrook. He was seventh of eleven children and was the last surviving sibling. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his sisters: Ruby Pearl Lashbrook (Frank Tanton), Wilma Jean Lashbrook (John Cornish), Beverly June Lashbrook (Wesley Sortzei) and Beulah Eileen Lashbrook and his brothers: Roy Earl Lashbrook, David Russell Lashbrook, Ervin Ray Lashbrook,, Gordon Elmer Lashbrook, Earl Charles Lashbrook, Rex Kendall Lashbrook.
Surviving him are four children: Rebecca May Lashbrook (William Tallman) of Alvin, TX; Britt Oliver of Traverse City, MI; Keith Allen Lashbrook of Harrison, MI; and Patricia Lashbrook (Cuthberto Gonzales) of Abilene., TX; along with nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr., Lashbrook was a descendent of Francis Cooke who came to America on the Mayflower. His ancestors also include a Revolutionary War veteran as well as the early settlers of the St. Clair County area in Michigan.
Purl was Golden Glove Boxer and had served in the US Marine Corps as a PFC, during World War II. He was aboard the Ticonderoga when it entered Tokyo Bay in Japan immediately after the surrender.
Purl moved to the Mio area in the 1970s and made his home and life there.
He was a painter by trade and a decades-long member of the ""Breakfast Club"" at the Paddle Inn Restaurant in Mio.
