Phyllis Louise Hoy

March 15, 1925 — October 11, 2022

Phyllis Louise Hoy, age 97, maiden name Lease, peacefully passed away October 11, 2022 at Wellspring Lutheran Services, Fairview Campus, with family present.
She was born near Howard, South Dakota on March 15, 1925 and was graduated from Littlefield Township High School in Alanson, Michigan. Phyllis married Gordon Hoy on February 2, 1944 in Pontiac. They moved back to Gordon’s seven acres between Mio and Rose City in 1947 to a cabin without electricity and water from a pitcher pump Gordon was in the building business with a rare (at the time) electric power Skil saw and generator (light plant). Because of lack of electric power, water had to be hauled for many concrete jobs.
When Gordon started building the store on evenings and weekends (Hoy’s Corner and later named the Pink Store), Phyllis would have waiting two wheelbarrows of mixed mortar and Gordon would lay blocks until dark. She managed the store for 19 years, meeting many people and friends. She helped catch burglars that were roaming in the dark breaking and entering the store that was 7 miles from the nearest town.
Over the years, Gordon and Phyllis traveled extensively, 20 plus years, visiting Canada, Mexico, and all states but six. They pulled a Holiday Rambler travel trailer, making many new friends and hooking up with old friends and relatives. They were married 55 years until Gordon’s passing.
She is predeceased by her three brothers, her husband Gordon, and all of his brothers and sister.
She is survived by her two sons: Michael of Port Township, Washington, and James of Newberry, Michigan; daughter-in-law Connie, and five grandchildren: Katie, Beth, Michael, Colleen, and Mary, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
She loved traveling, swimming, arts and crafts, music, lots of laughs, Biblical verses, and her family.
Her knees gave out, so she had to enter Wellspring Lutheran Services in Fairview, often saying, “If I have to be in a place, this is a good one.” She always had a positive, friendly smile. Thank you to Lashley Funeral Home, Hospice, and the caring staff at Wellspring Lutheran Services.
Interment is with her husband Gordon in Mentor Township Cemetery.
This is the end of an era. The Albert Hoy family has owned land in southern Oscoda County since 1900 and with Phyllis’s passing and transfer of her home, that comes to an end.
