David George Galer, age 83, of Mio, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009, at his farm he loved, surrounded by his family. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Graveside Service and interment of ashes, Sunday Sept. 20, 2009 at 1:30 PM at the Luzerne Cemetery,with Pastor Marcel Lamb officiating. Military Honors by Luzerne American Legion Post #162. David was born on December 30, 1925 in El Paso, TX to George E. and Marion D. (Barnett) Galer. He was raised in Mio. David was always a very multi-faceted person who was mechanically inclined. He worked as a dairy farmer for most of his life; but he was also a sawmill owner and operator and an inventor. With his friend Hank Cordell he designed and engineered a wood-burning ""Gas-a-Fire"" which was patented and still is in use locally at an area business. He received special recognition for this invention in Washington, D.C. David also worked with the D.N.R. on a project researching hybrid sunfish, he served on the Mio AuSable School Board and taught welding through the 4H program in Oscoda County. He had a positive influence on many area youth and young men, and remained important to them throughout their lives as a role model and friend. David enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. At Lost Creek Sky Ranch, he was known by his many friends as ""The Mayor of the North Endâ??. He will be greatly missed. David is survived by his children: Richard (Sue) Galer of Mio; Susan Galer of Fairview; and Sally Galer of Mio; his sister Carolyn Brown of Mesa, AZ ;3 grandchildren: Wade (Buffy) Galer, Teresa (Clarence) Williams and Cynthia Galer; 5 great grandchildren: Iron, Reed, Reese, Devon and Tate and his special friends: Hank Cordell, Al Grewe, Charlie North, and Bill Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Marion Galer. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Helping Hands, West Branch. A special ""Thank You"" is extended to Hospice of Helping Hands, Carol Rang, and so many other dear family members and friends to numerous to name for their love and care given to David.
