John R. Schanck, Jr.

On December 26, 2020, John Robert Schanck, Jr., loving and caring father of Denise Kalafut, William and Debbie Schanck, Patricia Schanck, John and Fran Schanck III; and loving husband of Marie (Cournyer) Schanck, who preceded him in death on November 27, 2020; went home to meet the Lord.

John was born in Midland, Michigan on March 20, 1936 to John W. Schanck, Sr. and Pearl M. (Nash) Schanck. In 1955, he married Marie Cournyer. They moved to Midland where John started his 30-year career as a Pipefitter at Dow. While at Dow, John received several awards and honors for safety and job improvement. In 1965, John and Marie bought the Dairy Ace in Mio, which they operated for 18 years. After retiring from Dow, he drove bus for Mio Schools for 10 years, a job he loved. He supported his community as a life-member of the Oscoda County Fair, officer in his church, and as a Mason in Mio Lodge #596. John and Marie loved to camp at Helmer Lake, and he had been known to drown several worms while he was there, but Marie always caught the most fish. His greatest loves were family, music, and many longtime friends. John was always there for family, and was more than willing to help friends with any projects that came his way. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many.

John had 9 grandchildren: Michael & Heidi Green, Melissa Merrit, Jennifer Wohlrabe, John Keith Schanck, Anthony Schanck, Sarah & Brian Orr, Rebecca Schanck, Ashley Peterson, and John Schanck IV. He had many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and lots of good friends. John was preceded in death by his wife Marie (Cournyer) Schanck, his father John Schanck, his mother Pearl (Nash) Schanck, his sisters: Bertha Condon and Florence Thompson; his brothers: Raymond Hughes, Roy Hughes, an infant brother, and his son-in-law Melvin Kalafut.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service for John and his loving wife Marie will be held at a later date in 2021.
