John R. “Jack” Small, age 97 of Curran, Michigan, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
Jack was born in Mio, Michigan on June 2, 1924 to John W. and Alma (Randall) Small. He graduated from Fairview High School with the Class of 1941. Jack served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corps. He married Maxine T.(Emerson) Small on December 6, 1952 in the Glennie Methodist Church. The couple lived in Curran where Jack farmed beef cattle. A loving father, he taught his boys to play baseball in the backyard and was active in the Alcona County Baseball League. He was also very active in the community. Jack served as Mitchell Township Treasurer; a member of the PCA Board (now known as Greenstone); Chairman of the West Branch Beef Calf Sale; and was on the Library Board. He also took care of Curran Cemetery. Jack took great pride in the quality of his herd and was known throughout the state for producing “the Small cattle”.
Jack is survived by his wife Maxine of Curran, MI; his children: Terry Small of Curran, MI; Kevin (Karen) Small of Curran, MI; Jeff (Becky) Small of Curran, MI; and Will (Robin) Small of Comins, MI; 2 sisters: Nancy Tolan of Lewiston, MI and Corky Tarr of Glennie, MI; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Betty Nelson.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date with interment of ashes at Curran Cemetery, Curran, Michigan.
