John R. Holberton

Mr. John R. Holberton, age 86 of Comins, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at The Home at AuSable Valley Community in Fairview, Michigan.
John was born on January 15, 1924 in Detroit, MI to John and Catherine (Paolini) Holberton.  He served his country in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater on the USS Hoggatt Bay.  He married Virginia ""Jean"" (Hengy) Holberton on November 8, 1943 in Detroit.  The family moved to Comins in 1958.  John had worked for Ford Motor Company, Marathon Oil Company, and as a Grader for the Oscoda County Road Commission.  In 1983, along with his wife Jean and son John, he began building and establishing the Cedar Valley Golf Club in Comins, MI, which opened in 1990. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and rock collector
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Virginia ""Jean"" Holberton; his children: Frank (Linda) Holberton of Comins; Lee (Kristen) Holberton of Millersburg; Mary Swartzendruber of Fairview; Liz (Larry) Sidebottom of Comins; Tom (Becky) Holberton of Otisville; Dan (Tammy) Holberton of Fairview and Michael (Debby) Holberton of Comins; his daughter-in-law Sharon Holberton of Comins; 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his son John and his sisters Dorothy and Ruth.
In accordance with John's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
