Mr. John David Holberton, age 60, of Comins, MI, died Monday, March 5th, 2007 at Hernando-Pasco Care Center, Dade City, Florida.
Visitation Friday March 9, 2007 from 3-9, at The Lashley Funeral Home, Mio with service the following day, Saturday March 10th, at The Fairview Mennonite Church at 11:00 AM. with Pastor Eldon Krider officiating. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will follow the funeral services.
John was born January 8, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He was a graduate of Fairview School. He joined the The U.S. Navy, serving his country in The Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Ranger, remaining in the Naval Reserve for one year following his discharge. John was self employed. He started a logging operation (Cutting and Bunching) that eventually led to a whole tree chipping operation. In 1983, he started working on his dream, to build a golf course. Nine holes were completed and The Cedar Valley Golf Course in Comins was opened in May of 1990 with another nine holes completed in 1998. He coached the Fairview Golf Team as both Assistant and Head Coach for many years, and was awarded ""Coach of the Year"" in 1997. He was a Class A Golf Course Superintendent for 16 years.
Surviving are his loving wife Sharon; sons: John Dale (Candie) Holberton and Spencer Holberton. Parents John & Jean Holberton; siblings: Frank (Linda) Holberton, Lee Holberton, Mary (Glen) Swartzendruber, Liz (Larry) Sidebottom, Tom (Becky) Holberton, Dan (Tammy) Holberton and Mike (Deb) Holberton; granddaughters: Hilary and Gabrielle and his faithful companion Gizmo.
