Joan G. Maier

Joan G. Maier, age 86 of Mio, Michigan, passed away at The Villa at Rose City on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.

Joan was born in Mio, Michigan on December 23, 1932 to Orson and Magdalena (Schrott) Sherwood. She graduated from Mio High School with the Class of 1952. Joan married Robert Maier on June 25, 1954 in the Mio United Methodist Church, with Rev. Royce officiating. She had worked at Whitney’s Drug Store and Frick insurance Agency. She and Robert also owned and operated Ye Olde Towne Shoppe in Mio. She later worked for the Wertsmith Credit Union in Mio and Fairview. Joan also worked at the Oscoda County Library later in life. Joan was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mio, the Mio Red Hats, and a former member of the Mio K of C Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, cooking, and traveling.

Joan is survived by her son Dennis Maier of Mio, MI; her sister Roberta “Bobbie” Willett of Charlevoix, MI; her sister-in-law Ellen Sherwood of Fairview, MI; her cousin Roma Galbraith and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert on June 27, 2010; her brother Lee Sherwood; and her sister Judy Kilby.

Visitation on Friday, August 30, 2019 from 2 – 8 PM at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI, with a Vigil Prayer Service and Rosary offered by St. Mary Parish, beginning at 7 PM. Joan will lie in state on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mio, Michigan from 10 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM with Rev, Santiago Hoyumpa as Celebrant. Interment will follow the Mass at Mentor Township Cemetery, Mio, Michigan.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the Staff at the Villa of Rose City and Hospice Compassus for the kindness, compassion, visits, and prayers shared with “Joanie”.

Memorial donations may be made to the Our Lady of the Woods Shrine Restoration Fund, Hospice Compassus, or to the Activities Department at the Villa at Rose City.
