Jack Stuart Kann

April 25, 1948 — July 17, 2024

Jack Stuart Kann, born in Grayling on April 25th, 1948 to Elaine and Bernard Kann of Red Oak, Michigan. Jack was a warrior ‘til the end, fighting off brain cancer for over 3 years with strength, dignity, and humor. His loving partner, Kathy Coates was by his side the entire time, encouraging him, sharing their faith together as well as their enjoyment of music. Jack went to be with his loving savior on July 17, 2024 at the age of 76.

Jack worked two jobs most of his life, going through an apprenticeship program for painting and becoming a sheriff’s deputy early in life. During that time, he and Janet, his childhood sweetheart, raised two children, Duane and DeAnna.

Jack lived his life with immense integrity and honor. He not only taught values of hard work and faith in Jesus Christ to his children, he lived out those lessons, making a difference in the Oscoda County community as Sheriff for 6 years. Jack and Janet were a team and she was always by his side, loving on the community with her baking, cards, warm smiles and laughs.

Jack ended his career in law enforcement, Managing statewide Jail Services Unit within the State of Michigan Department of Corrections. During that time, he also acquired several rental properties that he renovated using his painting and handyman talents. Jack also made outside home improvements to surprise others in need in their mobile home park. That’s the kind of man he was.

Jack and Janet were married for 53 years and taught their family-DeAnna (Rich) and Duane (Margaret, Jason (Laurynn) and Justin ( Erin). The value of marriage and commitment, loyalty, faith, and love. The birth of his first great granddaughter, Blakely, last year was an exciting time for him and he loved seeing her grow.

Jack made friends wherever he went, and he was a role model in continuing to build relationships throughout his life. He was wise counsel and an objective thinker, so others often sought his advice. He was a talented guitar player and singer and he and his brothers often played at their parks for audiences in the Florida area. Jack enjoyed his annual trip with his brothers where they golfed and joked and did who knows what else!

Jack was preceded in death by his wife Janet in 2020 and his parents Bernie and Elaine as well as in-laws Fran and Gloyd Money. Thank you to the hospice team of McLaren-Flint, you were awesome!
