Isla Bernice Oakes, age 89, of Mio, MI, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009 at her home.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 2 P.M. at Lashley Funeral Home, Mio with Pastor Russell Bowman officiating.
Isla was born on January 30, 1920 in Flint, Michigan to Arthur and Erma (Dear) Brooks. She worked for the State of Michigan as a foster care parent in her home for twenty years; caring for over 100 children in her career. Isla enjoyed jig saw puzzles, plastic canvas crafting, watching wildlife, fishing, mushrooming, and watching the Detroit Tigers.
Isla is survived by her children: Larry (Judy) Oakes of Mio and Melissa (Howard) Makin of Ogden, Utah; her sisters: Velma Bushre of Roscommon, Michigan and Lenora Lee of Rexton, Michigan; her grandchildren: Tracy, Tony, Kent, Steven, and Karen; and her great grandchildren: Paige, Alex, Carrie, and Mitchell. Isla was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth Oakes; her son Kenneth Oakes, Jr.; her brothers: Albert and Floyd; and her sisters: Sylvia, Mary, Audrey and an infant sister.
