Germaine E. Dennis, age 96 of Mio, Michigan, passed away at The Home at Wellspring Lutheran Services in Fairview, MI, where she had spent the past few years in their care, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.
Germaine was born in Gladwin, Michigan on October 29, 1919 to John and Caroline (Alberton) McKenna. She married Jim Dennis in West Branch, Michigan and settled in Mio, MI in 1956. She worked for the State of Michigan in both Ogemaw and Oscoda Counties in the FHA office, and also worked for the Federal Government in the USDA office in Mio. Following her retirement, she worked for her husband Jim in his insurance agency and also worked in the MSU Extension office. Germaine served as clerk and trustee for Big Creek Township. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mio, the D.C.C.W., was a founding member of Oscoda County Right to Life, the Lady Lions, the Bridge Club, the “Lunch Bunch”, and the Red Hat Ladies. She also traveled with tour groups and her sisters around the world. Germaine loved people and often was the first to welcome new arrivals to Mio.
Germaine is survived by her daughter Ellen (George Gaviria) Sherwood of Mio, MI and Sarasota. FL; her siblings: Margaret Flynn of Gladwin, MI; Mary Bremer of Saginaw, MI; Mildred Wells of Alpena, MI; and John McKenna of Gladwin, MI; her grandchildren: Laura (Doug) Williams, Scott (Mona) Sherwood, Sarah Lee (Ken) Wolfe, Jessica (Oke) Liimatta, David (Alicjia) Dennis, and Paul (Aretha) Dennis; her great-grandchildren: Melissa, Hannah, Alex, Nicholas, Tiana, Mikko, Maisie, Sydney, Michael, and Will; and her daughter-in-law Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, her son Michael, and her brothers: Francis, William, Mark and Jerome.
Visitation on Friday, December 4, 2015 from 1-4 PM and from 6-9 PM at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI, with a Vigil service and Rosary beginning at 7 PM offered by St. Mary Catholic Church. She will lie in state from 10 AM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mio, MI, with Mass celebrated by Fr. Santiago Hoyumpa. Interment will follow at Mentor Township Cemetery, Mio, MI.
Memorial donations may be made toward the refurbishing of the Christ the King statue at Our Lady of the Woods Shrine c/o St Mary Shrine.
