George Leslie Somers, 61, a long-time resident of Mio passed away on September 4, 2007. George was born to George Lorne Somers and Catherine Jacqueline Dodd Somers in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England while his father was stationed there during the war. He came to the United States on the Queen Mary when he was 6 months old. He graduated from Redford Union High School in 1964.
George married Katherine Evelyn (Cowger) Somers on August 13, 1965. He loved living in Oscoda County because of his love for the outdoors. He shared many hobbies with his family through the years including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, golf and, most recently, R/C airplane modeling and a return to motorcycling.
Surviving are his wife Katherine; father: George (Faith) Somers; loving son: Bret (Krista) Somers; grandchildren: Bryce and Payton Somers; sisters: Pearl (Tom) Mallock and Patricia (David) Kennedy; brothers: Norman (Kim) Somers, Charles (Rebecca) Somers, John (Debbie) Somers and Frank (Karen) Somers; father and mother in-law: Frank and Bettye Cowger, who loved him like a son; brothers and sisters in-law: Frank (Beth) Cowger, Colleen McDowell, Marianne Cowger, and Linda (Jim) Matulevicz. George will also be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews whom he loved playing with through the years. He was preceded in death by his mother Catherine Jacqueline Somers.

Cremation has taken place. Plans for a memorial service have not been finalized. Interment of ashes will be at Mentor Township Cemetery.
