George W. Matthews, Sr.

George W. Matthews, Sr., age 87, of Lupton, MI, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019, at Horizon Senior Living, in St. Helen.

George was born in Lupton, MI on February 13, 1932, a son of Floyd and Frankie (Wade) Matthews. He Married Sherlie (Vaughan) Matthews in 1954. George worked as a farmer and brick layer before he opened and operated Matthews Mill in South Branch. He was a member of the Hale Eagles Club and enjoyed playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing trips to the UP and Fishing and moose hunting trips to Canada and casino trips. Following Sherlie's passing in September of 1997, George married Betty (Anderson) Matthews in 2003 and she also preceded him in death in October of 2017.

Surviving are his sons: George (Lisa) Matthews, Jr. and Leroy Matthews both of Lupton; grandchildren: Dawn Kovach, Ken (Jodi) Matthews, Karl (Sarah) Matthews, Kain (Halee) Matthews and Halle Matthews; great grandchildren: John Jr., Troy, Kiara, Alexis, Kenny, Karter, Kennedy, Rylan and Emme.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wives: Sherlie and Betty, son in law John Kovach, Sr.; sister Reva Sergeant and brothers: Lester Bill and Ray.

In accordance with George's wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside services 11:00 AM Saturday, April 13, 2019 at The Lane Heights Cemetery, Lupton, with Pastor Mel Killinger officiating. A memorial gathering and luncheon to follow at The Rose Township Hall.
