George "Sonny" Marsh, Jr.

George "Sonny" Marsh Jr. of Mio passed away on January 16, 2018.  He suffered with the effects of Alzheimer’s for more than a decade.  He was born on September 26, 1932.

George is survived by his wife of 66 years Mavis (Bugg) Marsh.  Together they raised five children:  Rodney & Sherry Marsh , Connie Marsh Turner & Tony, Roger and Brenda Marsh, Craig and Kathy Marsh and Tracie Marsh Wilson. He has 10 grandchildren:  Ashley & Michelle Marsh, Travis Marsh, Clint & Robin Turner, Clay Turner, Shane Bick, Jamie Bick, Casey Bick, Stacy Reinke, T.C. Marsh, and Randi Marsh. .He is survived by one sister and brother in law:  Sally and Gerald Abbe He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and eight great grandchildren. During his early years, George worked for Bob Handrich at Surge Products in Fairview.  He also delivered Standard Oil products for Dan Nolan in Mio. George and Mavis worked the Marsh family farm on Kittle Road.  He raised beef cattle, strawberries, vegetables and hay.  He was proud that the land was named as a Centennial Farm with the State of Michigan.  It has been titled in the Marsh name since 1894. He was the Supervisor for MDOT in Mio retiring after 31 years of service. After retirement, George and Mavis enjoyed traveling and camping.  They loved to attend air shows in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  They also drove the full length of the Alaska Highway sleeping in a tent along the way. They enjoyed collecting antique cars.  Together they collected numerous trophies and awards with their vehicles at local car shows.  In their later years they chose to give each one of their five children one of their five prize winning vehicles. George is predeceased in death by his parents:  George and Elizabeth Marsh, two sisters:  Margie Marsh Troyer and Lorraine Marsh Dietrich.  He is also predeceased by one great grandson:  Taylor Marsh. Services are handled by Lashley Funeral Home in Mio.  Visitation will be held at Lashley on Sunday January 21, 2018 from 1:00pm ---4:00pm, and again from 6:00pm -- 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday January 22, 2018 at 11:00am.  Pastor Steven Thiel will be officiating the services. Interment will be held at Kittle Cemetery. Memorials may be made in George's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
