Gary Brice Blamer, age 79, of Mio, MI, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at Munson Grayling Hospital.
Gary was born in Atlanta, Michigan on September 1, 1937, a son of the late Genevra (Fournier) and Robert Blamer. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1955 and attended County Normal Teaching School for a year and Alpena Community College, where he received his teaching certificate in 1957.
Gary married Shirley Anne (Scarsella) Blamer on August 10, 1957 in Lewiston, MI. He began his teaching career in a two-room school house in Rockford, MI and later taught in Frederic, Lewiston, Atlanta, and Corunna school systems. Gary returned to college and graduated with a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Michigan State University. He came to Mio AuSable Schools in 1966 where he served as Elementary Principal until his retirement in 1988.
Gary was a very active member of his community. He was a member and past President of the Mio Lions Club, served as Governor of the Mio Moose Lodge, as well as President of the Northern Michigan District Moose Association. He was an active member and past officer of the S.A.L. Post 162-Luzerne, a member of the Atlanta Eagles Club and the Masonic Lodge of Atlanta, MI, and served as Secretary for the Northeastern Michigan Horseshoe League 18 years at its inception. Gary and Shirley wintered in Surfside Beach, SC for the past 20 years, where he remained active as a member of the local Elks Club. Gary enjoyed golfing, bowling, rabbit hunting, fishing, gardening, and family time; he especially enjoyed the many hunting and fishing trips to Canada with his sons and friends.
Surviving Gary are his wife, Shirley; children: Daniel (Ann Sermak) Blamer of Mio, David (Pamela Saelens) Blamer of Mio, Dawn Blamer-Aspenleiter (Brian) of Traverse City, MI and Donald (Marlana Stone) Blamer of Oscoda, MI; grandchildren: Nathan (Ashley) Blamer of Rose City, MI, Lynsie (Michael) Provost of West Branch, MI, Zachary Blamer of Stanton, MI, Kelsie Blamer of Mio, MI, Taeler Aspenleiter of Marquette, MI, and Hope Aspenleiter of Traverse City, MI; great- grandchildren: Bennett Blamer and Oliver Provost. Gary is also survived by a sister: Mary Ann (Donald) Marlatt of Atlanta, MI and a brother: Claude "Lary" (Diane) Blamer of Central Lake, MI.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Lashley Funeral Home in Mio, MI on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM . A celebration of Gary's life and a luncheon will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 2:00 - 6:00 PM at the Mio Moose Lodge.
