Mrs. Frances Irene Galer, age 82, of Fairview, passed away Sunday, August 30th, 2009 at her home. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Graveside Service and interment of ashes at Fairview Cemetery on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Marcel Lamb officiating. Surviving are her children: Richard (Sue) Galer of Mio, Susan Galer of Fairview and Sally Galer of Mio; her sister Helen Kern of Bay City, MI; 3 grandchildren: Wade (Buffy) Galer, Teresa (Clarence) Williams and Cynthia Galer; 5 great grandchildren: Iron, Reed, Reese, Devon and Tate and several nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her parents: William F. & Fern (Hopkins) McNeely, 2 sisters: Donna Elsner and Mary McNeely; her brother William H. McNeely and her former husband and her children's father David G. Galer on August 13, 2009. Frances was born in Detroit on Sept. 16, 1926. She was raised in Fairview and graduated from Fairview High School, class of 1946. She graduated from Kirtland Community College with an LPN degree in Nursing. She worked for the former White Oak Nursing Home in Mio and volunteered at local Red Cross Blood Drives. Frances, a passionate Democrat, was an active member of the community, where she served as Big Creek Township Clerk in the 1980s, had been a member of The Lady Lions Club of Mio, a member of the Northwoods Club, taught sewing through the Oscoda County 4-H, was a member of the former Social Services Board, served on the County Fair Board and donated her time and talents sewing and mending for The AuSable Valley Nursing Home. Frances enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, reading, dancing, traveling, bird watching, crossword puzzles and will be remembered as an excellent cook.
