Ernest D. Layman (Ernie), age 87, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Bortz Health Care in Rose City, Michigan.
Visitation Tuesday 4-8 PM at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio. Funeral Services 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at the funeral home, with Mr. Steven Gusler officiating. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Fairview.
Ernie was born April 13, 1920 in Lima, Ohio to Emory and Lela Layman, the third of seven children. The Layman family moved to Fairview, Michigan in 1938 where Ernie met and married Martha Nolan on June 24, 1943. They were married for 55 years. Ernie served in World War II with the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Ernie worked for the Fairview Creamery for a short time after being discharged from the service and then became employed in 1950 by Flint Sausage Works for whom he delivered Salays meat products for 32 years. During the winter months, Ernie was an avid snowmobiler. His summer recreation was pitching horseshoes. He was a devoted NASCAR fan making numerous trips to Michigan International Raceway to enjoy the races. Surviving are his daughters, Linda (Ralph) Graham of Rose City, Kathy Layman of Petoskey, son Paul Layman of Fairview , granddaughter, Debbie (Dean) Webster and great-grandchildren Rachel and Nicholas Webster all of Glennie; sisters: Grace Handrich and Mary Alice Handrich; Brothers: Carl and Oliver Layman.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter, Karen Grant, brother Edwin Layman and sister Dorothy Yoder.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Bortz Health Care for the extra special loving care shown to Ernie.
