Dorothy Marie (Kern) McMahan, age 92, formerly of Luzerne, Michigan, passed away, October 23, 2021, at Wellsprings Lutheran Service in Fairview, Michigan.
Dorothy was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 22, 1929, to the late Oswald and Eula (Stein) Kern. She grew up in Center Line, Michigan as the 3rd child of 11 siblings, and attended St. Clement Parochial School. She is the oldest of her remaining siblings: Irene (Pete) Diotte of Antioch, CA, and Helen Meduvsky of Warren, MI. Dorothy and Freddie were her parent’s first set of twins, however, he passed away at the age of 5 years. Also, preceded in death by her siblings: Richard Kern, Donald Kern, Josephine Woods, Margaret (Sister Sharon Marie), Vince Kern, Ilene Matt, and Robert Kern.
Mom married our dad, Howard Lipson, in 1951 and had 8 children known as "The Crazy 8". They thought they were pretty clever by beginning all of our names with a C! Christine Matthews of Clawson, Carl Lipson of Frankfort, Charlene (Bill) Mathis of Lupton, Carol (George) Kerschenheiter of Mio, Craig (Carol) Lipson of Clawson, Connie Lipson (deceased), Cary Lipson of Clawson, and Catherine (James) Parker of Grayling.
Mom was remarried to Jim McMahan in 1981 and together they lived in Luzerne until his death in 2012. They enjoyed fishing and camping in their 5th wheel, traveling locally and across many states. Mom also loved gardening, bingo, euchre, and shooting pool. She was a long-time member of the Mio Moose Lodge #1035.
Her 11 grandchildren affectionately called her Grandma Up North: Benjamin Newcomb, Ryan (Creighton) Newcomb and Kelli (Ben) Kloss; Michaelene (Viktor) Pjetri and Billy Mathis; Danielle (Josh) Carey and Ashley (James) Daley; Vanessa Lipson and Craig Lipson Jr.; Chanda Szagesh and Tianna (Brandon) Bauer.
She was also Great Grandma GG to 10 great-grandchildren: Grant and Leah Carey; Nova and Ivy Bauer; Xavier, Adrien, and Velda Pjetri; Josephine Lipson and Kameron and Kai Daley. Mom was also anxiously awaiting the arrival of her 11th great-grandchild, Baby Kloss.
Visitation and funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 27th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mio, MI 48647. The visitation will begin at 11 am with the services following at 1:00 PM.
