Carl Emerson Layman, age 84 of Alma, formerly of Fairview, MI, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, August 1, 2011 at Masonic Pathways of Alma, Michigan.  Funeral services will be held at Lashley Funeral Home in Mio, Michigan, at 11 AM Friday, August 5, 2011.  Services will be conducted by Roger Yoder with interment following at Comins Township Cemetery in Fairview, MI.   Visitation will be on Thursday, August 4, 2011 from 1-4 and from 6-9 PM at the Funeral Home.Carl was born in Clayton, Ohio on June 12, 1927, the son of Emery E. and Lela P. (Diller) Layman.  He was graduated from Fairview High School where he enjoyed playing on the Varsity Basketball team.  He enlisted in the Army in 1945 and served in Germany until he was Honorably Discharged in 1947.  He was married for 28 years to Gene (yes G-E-N-E) Garner Caldwell.  Carl was a retired carpenter who enjoyed using his craftsman's skills to fabricate many of his original designs which he took pleasure in sharing with his many friends in the Fairview area.  His pleasures included traveling the U.S.A. with his family, watching NASCAR races on T.V., golf, bowling, and woodworking.Carl is survived by his daughters:  Vicky, married to Thomas Kuffner of Elizabethtown, PA, and Carla, married to Michael Peters of Ithaca, MI; his step-son Harold Caldwell of Ortonville, MI; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters:  Mary Alice Handrich and Grace Handrich; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers:  Edwin, Oliver and Ernest; and 1 sister Dorothy Yoder.Memorials may be made to The Paralyzed Veterans of America in his memory.Arrangements by Lashley Funeral Home
