Bessie E. King

October 4, 1923 — June 11, 2017

Bessie Elizabeth King passed away on Sunday June 11, 2017 in Fairview, MI at Wellspring Lutheran Nursing Home. She was born Bessie Elizabeth Galick in Cleveland, OH on October 4, 1923. She moved to the Grand Blanc, MI area where she completed high school. She worked for General Motors, in an office position, during World War II. Following the war, she married Marshall E. King in 1947 who preceded her in death in May 1968. Bessie had two boys Carey L. King and Darwin L. King. Carey preceded her in death in 2008. Surviving is Darwin, daughter in law Lois, and grandson Edward who reside in Allegany, NY. Also, preceding her in death was a sister, Rose and a brother John.

Bessie has always had a very strong Christian faith. She served as the church secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church in Davison, Michigan for many years as her boys were growing up. Since the mid-1970’s, Bessie and Carey lived on Crooked Lake until Carey’s death in 2008 when she moved to an independent living home at Wellspring Lutheran Services. Since moving to the Fairview area, Bessie and Carey attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mio, Michigan. Bessie was a devout member who attended every Sunday that her health allowed. Her favorite recent memories are of attending St. John’s this past Easter season.

Bessie was involved in a number of activities while living in the Fairview area. She loved dancing of all types and belonged, for many years, to a local dance group. She also loved to do china painting and making crafts of all types. She loved birds, flowers, and traveling to Sault Ste. Marie. For many years, her sons took her on visits to the Soo during the summer. She loved the Soo Locks Boat Trip and even playing penny slots at the local casino where she was delighted with a $5 jackpot. Bessie also enjoyed the local theatre performances every summer at the Soo Theatre (especially the musicals).

The viewing and funeral service for Bessie will be at her beloved St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mio on Saturday, June 17, from 1pm-3pm with the funeral and committal services following at 3pm. All those attending are invited to stay for a light meal prepared by the ladies of St. John’s church following the services.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mio.

Arrangements by Lashley Funeral Home, Mio.
