Barry Lynn Shantz, age 64 of Mio, Michigan, passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on Sunday, April 28, 2013.
Barry was born in West Branch, Michigan on April 24, 1949 to Robert and Jean (Larrison) Shantz.  He was raised in Fairview, Michigan; graduating from Fairview High School with the Class of 1967.  He began attending Michigan State University, but was called to serve his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he returned to Michigan State, and then graduated from Cooley Law School in Lansing, MI, with the Class of 1977.  He returned to Oscoda County, residing in Mio, where he was elected as Oscoda County Prosecuting Attorney, a position he held for 30 years.  Barry was a member of the Mio Lions Club; a Board Member for Primary Care; a Board Member of The AuSable Valley Nursing Home and the Michigan Bar Association. He enjoyed gardening, playing guitar, traveling, cooking, boating, and sports:  basketball, football, and baseball.
Surviving are his wife Debby of Mio, MI; his parents Bob and Jean Shantz of Venice, FL;  his children:  Kyle (Amy) Shantz of Elkhorn, WI; Jennifer Shantz (Justin) of Austin, TX; Alexis Graham of Mio, MI; Christopher (Alicia) Graham of Rose City, MI; and Jerry (Darci) Graham of Grand Haven, MI; his sister Marci Shantz of Ludlow, KY; his brothers: Craig (Jeanne) Shantz of Shelby Twp., MI; Kent (Dawn) Shantz of Rockford, IL; and Rob Shantz of Kiev, Ukraine; his grandchildren:  C.J., Hailey, and Kayla; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Earnest & Letha Shantz and Joseph & Wilma Larrison; Uncles Joe, Dick and Emerson Larrison and Al Burton; and Aunts: Wanda Brandt, Marion Burton and Shirley Larrison.
Visitation Friday, May 3, 2013 from 1-4 and 6-9 PM at Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI; and again on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 9-11 AM at the Mio Church of God; where Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM with Pastor Tracy Brooks of the Mio United Methodist Church officiating.  Interment will follow at Mentor Township Cemetery, Mio, Michigan, with Military honors offered by The Mio VFW Post # 4126.
Memorial donations may be made to the Oscoda County Sheriff Department, PO Box 129, Mio, MI 48647.
