Walter S. Lixey Sr., age 91, of Mio, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Saginaw, MI. Walter was born on February 8, 1919 in East Tawas, Michigan to John A. and Cora I. (MacMurray) Lixey.  He graduated from East Tawas High School, Class of 1937 and married Agnes Bischoff on October 2, 1941 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Tawas. Walter worked at Timkens Manufacturing in Detroit, Michigan.  He served his country from 1943-1945 in the US Navy during WWII as an Elec 2nd Class on an LST in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. He worked as a lineman for Consumers Power Company out of East Tawas retiring in 1975. The family moved to Mio in 1954. Walter was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mio and past president of the Holy Name Society; he was a member of the Mio-AuSable School Board for over 10 years, serving in the offices of Secretary, Treasurer and President until 1966. He and Agnes moved to Germfask, MI where they owned and operated Wa-Ag-Ley Campground until returning to Mio in 1991.  Walter was a Lifetime Member of the VFW; and had also been active in the Mio American Legion Post. Surviving are his children: Walter (Cathy) Lixey of Kempner, TX; and Linda (Dick) Whaley of Mio, MI; his grandchildren:  Shawn (Holly) Lixey of Richmond, TX; Jim (Melissa) Whaley of Mio, MI; Brian Lixey of Hudson Oaks, TX; Kristi (Ty) McGregor of Mio, MI; and Steve (Chantel) Blamer of Mio, MI; 10 great grandchildren; his in laws: Jay Lixey of East Tawas, MI; Marie Bischoff of Tawas City, MI; Howard (Mildred) Bischoff of Tawas City, MI and Irma Butenschoen of Midland, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Agnes in 2005; his sisters: Mary Lixey and Irene Klenow; and his brothers: John, Harris, Ed, Orlo, Joe, and James Lixey.In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mio, MI, with Fr. Raymond Cotter officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to: Grayling Mercy Hospital, 1100 E. Michigan Avenue, Grayling, MI  49738; Our Lady of the Woods Shrine Endowment Fund, c/o St. Mary Catholic Church, PO Box 189, Mio, MI  48647; or to The Oscoda County Community Foundation Scholarship Fund, PO Box 184, Mio, MI  48647
