Robert J. Maier, age 79, of Mio, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Bortz Health Care in Rose City, MI, with his wife Joan (Sherwood) Maier and son, Dennis, at his side.
Robert was born on March 25, 1931, son of Wellington William and Emily Maier in Detroit, MI. Robert graduated from Mio High School in 1950. He served his country in the US Marine Corps from 1952-1954. Upon his return home, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Sherwood, on June 25, 1954. They had just celebrated 56 years of marriage. Bob worked with his Dad and family from 1954-1956, for PermaLog Construction, which was started by his dad. He and Joan later owned The Olde Towne Shoppe from 1966-1992. He also was a school bus driver for Mio Schools, retiring in 1997. Bob was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mio. He was also very active in the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Woods Council #7329, Mio, as well as the 4th Degree Assembly #2371. He had served as District Deputy from 1998 - 2002, Grand Knight from 1989 - 1991, and was active in the Color Corps.
Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years Joan (nee Sherwood) Maier; and his son Dennis Maier. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother William E. Maier; and his sister Jean (nee Maier) Boerner.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 4-9 PM with a Prayer Service offered by St. Mary Parish at 7 PM, followed by a Knights of Columbus 4th Degree service and rosary, at Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, MI. Robert will lay in state Friday, July 2, 2010 from 10AM until the time of the Mass at 11 AM, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mio, with Father Raymond Cotter officiating. Interment at Mentor Township Cemetery, Mio, with a luncheon to follow at The Mio K of C Hall.
