Cremation Page

Cremation is a method of final disposition for human remains. It is a choice made by the next of kin, the same as earth burial. It may be selected with any other service plan offered or arranged.

Choices:

  • Private viewing for (Immediate Family Only) may be arranged prior to cremation.
  • Immediate Cremation, with or without memorial service.
  • Cremation following a viewing period (public of private) and/or a funeral service.
  • Cremation followed by graveside service and burial of ashes.
  • Other combinations of viewing, funeral, graveside service etc...

In Michigan, if no embalming is requested, and cremation has been chosen as a method of disposition, the cremation must take place within 48 hours of the time of death.

Embalming is required...

  • If cremation will not take place within the 48 hour limitation
  • If cremation is chosen and public viewing is requested prior to the cremation.
  • If a next of kin of equal relationship to the deceased are not in agreement with the cremation and a mutual decision cannot be reached with the 48 hour limitation.

The State of Michigan recognizes next of kin in the following order and the right and authority to arrange for final disposition.

Spouse
Adult Children
Parents
Siblings
Grand Children

Michigan law currently does not recognize common-law marriages or live-together situations, as to next of kin status for making arrangements for final disposition.

Guardianship, Power of Attorney or other such arrangements, end at death. Authority would pass back to next of kin hi the order listed above.
